A light rail train in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. This city has a population of only 181,743 and population density of 1,666 per square mile, and the urban area as a whole has a population of about a million. Yet, its new, 17.5 mile, two-line light rail system is heavily utilized with roughly 60,000 rides per day (far exceeding original projections). As a result of this great success, a third line is scheduled to open in 2009 and additional lines have been proposed.
