North of Renton, the railroad runs parallel to I-405, the most congested freeway in the Northwest. Despite decades of costly widening projects, congestion continues to worsen. Although the railroad has tremendous potential for transit use serving tens of thousands of riders a day, a handful of powerful politicians are pushing to replace it as quickly as possible with a bicycle trail that would serve a few hundred commuters per day (and many fewer when it rains).
